Should we be afraid of NDM-1?



Having put the non-existent swine flu pandemic out of mind, we now find that along comes a potentially greater threat. New Delhi metallo-lactamase-1. It is reported as being resistant to all known antibiotics. Unattached it presents little threat.



It originated in India – hence its name – and has spread to Pakistan, Bangladesh, USA, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and the UK, where we have 50 cases.



Its spread is attributed to people travelling to India for cheap operations and bringing it home with them. If they require further treatment it can enter our hospitals.



If it presents little threat on is own, what is the problem? Its ability to combine with other bacteria and so pass on its immunity to antibiotics.



So far it has combined with Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumonia.

So are we looking at a new pandemic? Only time will tell.

As usual the very young, the old and those who are infirm run the greatest risk.





With Bible in hand, we can expect something of this sort to happen in the future –

Matthew 24:4 (AV)

And Jesus answered and said unto [his disciples], Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

All these [are] the beginning of sorrows.

(Earthquakes? There have been 1187 earthquakes greater than magnitude 4 on the Richter scale between May 1st and August 11th this year).

Pestilence? When Gog, a powerful nation from the north, invades the land of Israel, God says –

Ezekiel 38:22 (AV )

And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that [are] with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.

Wikepedia has the following definition –

“Pest (organism), an animal or plant detrimental to humans or human concerns.

Pest, an archaic term for pestilence, originally the Black Death.

Interestingly the Jews were blamed for the Black Death because mostly they were immune because of their hygiene laws. And the way forwards with NDM-1 is isolation and scrupulous cleanliness, as one hospital is now applying.

One commentator to the Mail On Line article wrote,
“THIS IS THE END!! WE’RE ALL DOOOOOMED!!!!!!!!!!!”

Another wrote,

“Oh great another summer of dread of catching some horrible bug! Swine Flu last year, now this!!!”

Are we to be scaremongered once again?
